(a legacy) on our own terms, is a group show, featuring both emerging and established artists in their practice, that explore legacy and worth through various lenses. What does worth mean when it is ascribed by someone else? What does it mean when it is defined by self? What is a legacy that is marred by a harrowed past? What does a future look like when the past no longer dictates the journey?
Nikko Washington and Brandon Breaux, juxtapose abstraction and realism to address current socio-political themes and issues like police brutality, commodification and food insecurity. Alexandra Antoine, looks to her Haitian roots to reconstruct the world she wishes to inhabit, and honors her ancestors as a remembrance of where she came from. Candace Hunter combines historical text and images in collage to examine and layer the past and reimagine a future beyond our current times, and Yaounde Olu, imagines an existence beyond space and time in her retrofuturist digital renderings that are historical in context, but transcendental in nature.
